As the founder of The Powder Group, The Makeup Show and On Makeup Magazine, Michael DeVellis has the inside track on what it takes to make it big in the makeup artist industry. His more than 20 years of experience working with hundreds of top artists, product lines, artist agencies, trade events, productions, and publications make him uniquely qualified to share an insider’s perspective on the career of professional makeup artistry.

WHAT IS THE THING YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT THE PROFESSIONAL MAKEUP ARTIST INDUSTRY?

The thing I think I have always felt was the most attractive to me about our industry is the passion of the Makeup Artist. There is truly no industry I have ever experienced where there is such a pure joy and satisfaction from someone’s career. Makeup artists love their craft, and their clients. And everyone loves their Makeup Artist!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR THE POWDER GROUP IDEAS. WHAT ARE YOU AIMING AT?

In the beginning of the history of The Powder Group, we asked artists to open their minds to new ways of thinking about their artistry and craft. We wanted them to experience the strength of their community by coming together in unique ways to celebrate the career of professional makeup artistry. To this day, these are still the philosophies of the brand. In the beginning, when there were very few options for education and programs for pros, this meant producing small events where artists would develop a specific set of skills, or an understanding of an area of work – such as editorial makeup or airbrush artistry. As the years passed, we have evolved the type of programs we offer to evolve the artist further, and to elevate the craft of makeup artistry. Through the development of our businesses, including On Makeup Magazine, The Artist Summit, Evolution, the TPG Pro Program and The Makeup Show (which was sold in-full to our production partners Metropolitan Events in 2010), we have continued to raise the expectation on pro events in our industry, and, in the process, have become truly the premier connector of pro makeup artists and the brands and businesses that want to reach them.

WHAT ARE YOU THE MOST PROUD OF IN YOUR CAREER?

I think that the longevity of my career comes from the fact that I continue to have moments of pride. I have taken many risks in my career. I think that in order to have a true sense of pride in one’s work, you must work incredibly hard – but the pride comes from taking some risk. When I started my company, The Powder Group, in 2003 – there were very few places a new, or experienced, makeup artist could go for education, inspiration or community. My goal with The Powder Group was to shine a light on pro makeup artists, to provide inspirational programs for pros to participate in, and to create a strong community across our industry and truly get pros to come together in a way of support and family. I am very well aware that none of the other achievements of my career would be possible without the community that has come together over the past decade through the platform of The Powder Group being there and supporting these efforts. It’s that community, and the passion and commitment within it, that would definitely be what I am most proud of.

WHAT IS YOUR INVOLVMENT WITH MAKE UP FOR EVER NOW AND ITS ACADEMIES? WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU CAN BRING TO THE MAKE UP ARTISTS THAT THEY DON’T ALREADY HAVE?

What I think I bring to the students at the MAKE UP FOR EVER Academy is the opportunity to take all that they have learned in the amazing programs the Academy offers, and transition that into becoming a successful business as an artist. As a student leaves the safety of the Academy environment, it can be quite overwhelming and even frightening to be going out on your own to start your career. Providing them real-life information about our industry and how to make the strongest impact as a business in a very competitive market is critical to my purpose. Helping them to sort out what their next steps are and giving them a solid understanding of how to go from student to working artist in the shortest time possible is always my goal.

WHAT IS YOUR FIRST IMPRESSION OF OUR TV AND CINEMA ACADEMY PROJECT?

When I first heard that MAKE UP FOR EVER was opening an Academy exclusively for the world of cinema, TV and video, I thought it was an amazing opportunity for the network of Academies that the brand operates around the world to create yet another point of opportunity for the professional makeup community. Then, the more I learned about the program and its offerings and once I visited the site of the Academy at La Cité du Cinema – I was completely overwhelmed with excitement. After seeing the environment and learning about the other industry-focused businesses that would be based out of this facility, it was clear to me that this Academy was going to be a complete game-changer for the industry. When you combine the dynamic of an amazing education, with the relationship building and networking that will happen at Cite du Cinema – it is incredible to think what will come of this opportunity for the students of the MAKE UP FOR EVER TV & Cinema Academy.
