Beautiful afternoon

May 19, 2014

Each competition year the French National Gymnastics Team get new leotards and accessories. They also get a new makeup look to go along with their costumes and a personalized class, thanks to MAKE UP FOR EVER!

Ranging in age from 16 to 20, the gymnasts are amazing works of nature, able to perform the most spectacular feats with nothing but their own bodies as props.

Expecting teenagers to look at face charts and know how to recreate the makeup is a little unrealistic so the girls spent an afternoon at the MAKE UP FOR EVER Pro Loft in Paris with makeup artist Sandrine Vigneron, creator of the team’s makeup. She has created a cohesive look for the team’s 12 athletes – they will definitely look like a team! - but the eye shadow colors vary for the 5 soloists present today as they sport different colored leotards from one another when they compete.

Sandrine first uses a model to walk the girls through their makeup step by step, from skin preparation (concealer, primer, foundation) to the elongated, dramatic smoky eyes designed to be seen across stadiums. The girls follow along with their face charts, taking notes.  You can see they have amazing focus that belies their age yet seems a given considering the level they have attained in their chosen sport. What concentration!

Then it’s up the girls, seated in front of mirrors, to start from scratch with their face charts and notes – and Sandrine – to guide them. They’ve each got a personalized makeup box, missing only the foundation and lipstick. After Sandrine spends a few minutes with each, picking out the right skin match color, she then hands out the foundation and lipsticks that bring out the best in each of the gymnasts. There is no pressure, the afternoon is as relaxed as the girls. With different levels of makeup expertise, some ask more questions than others, with one or two a little nervous to ask for help, but all clearly enjoy this special time with Sandrine. What they don’t know is that by the time they walk out of there 4 hours later, all will feel confident, look great, and have no problem recreating their makeup wherever in the world they are. The only thing left to do now is go out and bring home those medals!
