The 4th annual MAKE UP FOR EVER Synchronized Swimming Open kicked off this past March in Montreuil, just outside Paris. A jam-packed international event, the Open has grown from 11 teams the first year to an impressive 26 nations present this year.

The three days were long, intense and filled with Aqua

Getting the backstage lowdown over post-Open coffee with Julie Dupy, MAKE UP FOR EVER’s head of Pro relations and lead makeup artist for this event, I was touched as always by her passion and enthusiasm. I also left with a new appreciation for what she does. Applying makeup to 250 swimmers over the 3 days of competition is not for sissies!

Though the official first day for Julie and her team of 6 makeup artists was Thursday March 20th, Julie’s work for the French national team started in January when she received the team’s competition bathing suit for the year and created a makeup look to go with it – elongated, color-popping smoky eyes and vivid, bright lips - drawing up face charts for the team to follow all year. The first day of the Open, the makeup artists started with the French team at the indecent hour of 7:00 a.m., face charts in hand. Throughout the morning, as other teams passed through the makeup area, the makeup artists decided on the spot what colors and look would best go with their bathing suit uniforms, applying their makeup swiftly and deftly. As I said earlier, 250 full faces in three days. No pressure or anything! Julie says she always chooses artists for this event who thrive under pressure.

Saturday found everyone with another 7:00 a.m. start and, with just half an hour to make up all 9 girls, the French swimmers were asked to come with foundation, blush and mouth done already.

The three days were long, intense and filled with Aqua. Not just the color of the pool water, Aqua is of course MAKE UP FOR EVER’s waterproof makeup line – first invented in 2006 to meet the needs of the French Synchronized Swim team! – and, considering the girls were in the pool from sunup to sundown competing in everything from solo and duet to team events, most welcomed by the swimmers!

All the competitors get a goodie bag – no, there weren’t any left over! – and the teams on the podium get even juicier goodies and a big MAKE UP FOR EVER OPEN winner’s trophy. An international competition whose results count towards the World Championships, the Open is a world-class sports event. However, with MAKE UP FOR EVER as its sponsor, there’s also a healthy dose of sparkle and glamor added to the mix.
