It was created to work in extreme conditions underwater but, I’m happy to say, it looks pretty beautiful on dry land too.

Many years ago I was asked by Muriel Hermine, a French champion synchronized swimmer, to create a line of makeup that would stay on underwater for her aquatic show “Sirella”. I have always loved a good challenge!

Honestly, I had a hunch that if I could pull it off – and I wasn’t even sure it could be done - it would not only meet the needs of sportswomen like Muriel, but also of professional makeup artists, because we were really missing long-lasting water-, sweat-, and element-resistant products at that time.

And, of course, every woman knows that feeling of leaving the house in the morning looking impeccable, makeup perfect, and realizing halfway through the day that, though you may feel fabulous your makeup doesn’t look so great anymore, so I thought that if we solved this, we would make everyone happy.

I worked with Richard Girousse (chemist and R&D Director at MAKE UP FOR EVER) 27 hours a day to find a formula that met all our criteria.

If you had looked up the word “patience” in the dictionary, his picture would have been in there. But we cracked it. Technologically, we broke new ground. We had to. No one had done it before.

But with AQUA, we found the formula for waterproof, element-proof, smudge-proof makeup. Bold, “hot” pigments that stay the course, and natural looks that stay looking natural until they are taken off. It was created to work in extreme conditions – by Olympic athletes, ice skaters and dancers who exert themselves under hot lights - but, I’m happy to say, it looks pretty beautiful on dry land too.
