Close Up on the lips

Every month, the long trainings students prepare for a photo shoot week. In January and February, Beauty photos are taken, among which, Close Ups.

Lips Close Up

Interview with Nil Berkoz, teacher at the Paris Academy in charge of students' books: Nil tells us about her role during the shootings as well as what is at stake for the students.

WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PHOTO SHOOTINGS FOR STUDENTS?

The shooting weeks are of utmost importance to our students, who start forming their professional book. Also, during the final exam, photos are assessed by a jury of professional Make-up Artists: the stakes are high, especially for students of the 6 and 7 months training, only assessed on their book.

WHY ARE "CLOSE UPS" NOW MANDATORY?

The book has to have at least one Close Up (lips or eye): that close, you can't cheat, only technique matters. Close Ups are also trendy among Artists and it's by being original that people can spot you out. It is important for us to guide our students to professional success by recognition of peers.
MAKE UP FOR EVER's logo is a lips Close Up, it's also a way for us, teachers, to honour the brand.

HOW ARE SHOOTINGS PREPARED?

The Beauty shooting weeks are in January and February and it's during these two weeks that students realize their close up. Upstream, they design their make-up on "planches univers" (elaborated Face Charts), to which they can add photos or drawings to illustrate their inspiration and show them to us. Our role is to guide them: there can be many corrections before getting our approval. We also advise them on their choice of model. For a "lips" Close Up, the model needs to have perfect and luscious lips.

A TEACHER IS ALWAYS BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER'S SIDE. WHY?

We are there to ensure the balance between a beautiful photo and a beautiful makeup. Naturally, the photographer will take amazing photos but they won't necessarily enhance the make-up nor the student's technique. Since only one will be chosen for the book, we're looking for the best photo that enhances the make-up. The photographer, the teacher and the student choose together to photo to keep. This discussion also enables us to accustom students refine their look on photos to help them understand what professionals see and look for in photos.

THE PHOTOS TAKEN, WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Photographers directly send me the photos and I dispatch them to the students. It's another opportunity to exchange with them, to discuss their make-up and to give them advice for the next shootings. I always keep in mind that their book needs to reflect their technical capacities all the while being modern with original visuals.
