Meet Celebrity Makeup Artist Viktorija Bowers – Part 1

October 10, 2013

I know it is cliché but makeup truly is like painting to me, a form of self-expression.

Viktorija Bowers is a fashion and editorial makeup artist whose work can be seen in Vogue, L’Officiel, Mariel Claire, SOMA, Seventeen, InStyle, Glamour and Muse, among other publications.   Viktorija sat with MAKE UP FOR EVER and shared what inspires her, what she loves most about makeup and a typical day in the life of a makeup artist in a two-part interview.

Who are some people that have inspired you throughout your career?

I was always inspired by people who were willing to take a chance on unknown, fledgling artists and give them advice or an opportunity without hesitation. People who are powerful but kind and removed from any kind of pretention. These are people that inspire me greatly.

What do you love most about makeup?

I know it is cliché but makeup truly is like painting to me, a form of self-expression. It allows you to bring your imagination to work, which makes it truly a privilege to be one of the lucky ones who call this a job.

Tell us about a typical day?

Usually by 9 am I am in one of the photo studios in the city working on a new editorial or advertising project. One more perk of the job is that it is never the same. Sometimes you have to meet at 5 am to get out of town to shoot, which induces “walking zombie syndrome” (until a coffee IV is infused into me), but I still love it.

How would you describe your signature look and what is it about your style that sets you apart from other makeup artists?

I think every artist has something special that they do, a signature of sorts. I would say I approach makeup more from the painter’s point of view, so I am able to think outside of the perimeters of eyes, lips and cheeks. I also like to imagine all kinds of makeup and bring it to life with help of a team of talented photographers, hair and clothing stylists. I like to tell stories.
