Mai From Thailand - FOR THE LOVE OF MAKEUP

Pro makeup artist Mai was one of those girls raiding her mother’s makeup stash as a child. She’s come a long way since then.

To celebrate MAKE UP FOR EVER’s 30 Years Anniversary, a Pro Makeup Artist Contest was launched. 7 winners won a spectacular Body Painting week at the MAKE UP FOR EVER Academy in Paris. The winners are a creative and infinitely interesting motley crew.

Originally self-taught, 27 year old Pro makeup artist Mai started doing makeup when she was 15 for her friends at her high school, getting so adept that she was charged with making up the cheerleaders before games.

Graduating from hotel management school four years ago was enough to convince Mai of what she didn’t want to do so, following her heart, she enrolled in makeup school. Fresh out of school, formally trained as a makeup artist at last, Mai started out as a freelancer, making up the women around her. Their friends requested her services, and so on and so on, until one of those referrals turned out to be someone in the entertainment industry. Fashion shoots followed and now she has a great clientele.

Mai’s winning character

Told recently by her fortune teller that she would be leaving Bangkok on a trip soon, Mai entered the contest on a whim – she’d never face or body painted before! Reinterpreting Maleficent – iconic, yes, but a party-going, wearable Maleficent – Mai was thrilled to win this amazing week at the MAKE UP FOR EVER Academy.

Whad did she learn & love?

Expecting the week to be really challenging, Mai says she is pleasantly surprised by the teaching methods. “Our professor makes really complicated techniques seem quite second nature,” she says.  She is also really enjoying the fact that they learn a new technique every morning but then practice the new knowledge freely on models every afternoon.

With her first afternoon free in Paris, Mai went with fellow student and well-known Thai makeup blogger Pear to the Champs Elysees. They took the obligatory selfies with the Arc de Triomphe behind them, then headed straight to Sephora, mega mecca of makeup. In Bangkok, Sephora isn’t as huge as it is here, so they lost themselves for hours, emerging poorer but totally blissed out.
