Last month MAKE UP FOR EVER was the official makeup partner at the OFF COURTS FESTIVAL to create the looks of the actors. Carole Rosteing, makeup artist share with us her experience.

Off Courts has been the key international festival of short films for the past 15 years. Actors, technicians, or producers come from all over the world to create in only 48 hours a Kino – a short film lasting few seconds or few minutes. During these 48 hours, everybody from the staff have to organize the pre-production, the production and the post-production of the Kino: a very challenging and stimulating moment.

Only two makeup artists were present at the festival to create the makeup of several hundreds of actors during the whole festival period. Carole Rosteing, makeup artist tells us more about her experience:

“Few minutes before shooting, the actors were coming into the room with the brief of the look. We had to create the looks in only few minutes without any preparation. We had to be creative and do the makeup quickly. We could create some natural looks, some baroque characters for instance or zombie look using special effects etc. All the looks were very challenging and unique”.

Sometimes Kino is shot in black and white and the way to do the makeup cannot be the same. For black and white, we have to use contrasted colors as shades of grey. For example, a red color will be very dark on the skin unlike a pink or a beige color. So we have to sculpt the face and use shadows and lights techniques.”
