The Twenties Roar into the Spotlight

Irene Jordi, a professional makeup artist with an impressive CV — think of all those gorgeous looks in Marie Antoinette and Grace of Monaco — takes time out from her busy backstage schedule to talk about the Roaring Twenties and give some exclusive tips on getting the look yourself.

That transformation was due mostly to her charisma rather than any real raw talent, and that’s what we try to convey with her makeup for the show

Minstinguett: Queen of the Roaring Twenties is a colorful and resolutely modern musical spectacle that recounts this extraordinary woman’s love for the stage. The lovely and talented Carmen Maria Vega brings to life the vivaciousness of Mistinguett night after night with the help of makeup artist Irene Jordi.

Make Up For Ever has partnered with Mistinguett as the exclusive supplier of makeup and tools for the creation of the stunning Roaring Twenties look worn by the cast. We spoke to Irene as she worked her magic, transforming Carmen into the sultry Mistinguett.

Make Up Forever: What was the creative process in preparing the look of Mistinguett?

Irene Jordi: Carmen, the lead makeup artist on the show, researched Mistinguett, her photos, posters and playbills as well as the makeup styles of the era to develop the dark and mysterious look for the show. I add my own touches, trying to draw out some of Carmen’s youthfulness and contemporary style to breath life into the character.

Make Up For Ever: What would you say embodies the look of Mistinguett?

Irene Jordi: She was a working-class girl from a small town outside of Paris. She did not have an artistic background, and yet she transformed herself into this incredible entertainer — the most celebrated of her time. That transformation was due mostly to her charisma rather than any real raw talent, and that’s what we try to convey with her makeup for the show. She is a woman of many faces.

Make Up For Ever: So, would say it’s a dramatic look?

Irene Jordi: Yes, absolutely. And also very modern. Mistinguett was a powerful woman, very much in control of her own image. We developed a look for the opening scene that has vibrant blue hues on the eyes and a raspberry lip. For another scene, her eyes are done in shades of purple, which go so well with Carmen’s olive complexion and dark hair. We also do a gold lid and bright red lips for another scene. It’s all very intense — nothing shy about it!

Make Up For Ever: The Roaring Twenties are really in right now, what with television series like Downton Abbey and Boardwalk Empire. Stars like Beyoncé and Rihanna have adopted the look for the red carpet. And of course we now have the spectacular Mistinguett. What is it about the 20s that’s so appealing  today?

Irene Jordi: I think it’s the vibrant spirit — the flash, the sexiness of the time that translates well today. That’s actually what we’ve tried to convey with the makeup for the show — our Mistinguett is not old-fashioned or nostalgic. She’s a Mistinguett of the 21st century.

Make Up For Ever: If a woman wanted to put a little of the flashy sexiness of Mistinguett into her look, what would you suggest?

Irene Jordi: It’s all about the eyes. Thick coats of mascara, eyeliner that hugs the lash line and bold, saturated colors on the lids. It’s daring, it’s about seduction. And of course a bright red lip! The flashy, happy, sexy look of Mistinguett is perfect for the bold, confident woman of the 21st century.
